Pacific

The least known ocean for European mariners and merchants was the vast Pacific. Most trade with Asia traveled around the Cape of Good Hope and returned the same way. But the early circumnavigations of Sir Francis Drake and Thomas Cavendish started a pattern of trans-Pacific voyaging that privateers like William Dampier and Woodes Rogers extended in the eighteenth century.
